TGF would like to welcome Rachel to the family. Rachel is a contributor over on Bambino Goodies and has turned reviewer for TGF today.
Made from super-absorbent hemp (rather than the usual cotton), the Baby Beehinds hemp nappy is a birth to potty nappy whose unique selling point is a natty system of poppers to adjust the size and absorbency. Hemp is also a good pick for the eco-friendly parent, since it needs less water and chemicals to grow.
As for me, I’m a relatively recent cloth nappy convert, using re-usables regularly on my five month old, but still sticking to disposables at night, or when we’re staying away from home.
Hold your horses
Once you have your nappy (or nappies) then you can’t just jump straight in and try them out. Or, rather, you could, but you’re instructed to wash it three times before use to ensure it’s absorbent enough. The instructions further add that the nappy only reaches its full absorbency after an eye-watering ten washes! Since it’s slow-drying and I wanted to get this review written sometime before 2009, I went with the three washes before cracking on and getting it in use. Continued

It is the end of my week of Green Foodie Thoughts and I thought it was only appropriate to make it the best food of all: chocolate! I am rather partial to a bit of chocolate and by making it organic I know that not only am I eating something better for me but that the people growing it aren’t working with harmful chemicals. If you add into the equation the fact that all of these chocolates are Fairtrade then you can enjoy your chocolate guilt free. Except for the calories!

Becoming greener is not something that can be done in a rush. It is better if we incorporate it into our lives rather than let it overrun it. By this I mean that next time you need to buy more cleaning products for the house, pick the greener option rather than your usual brand which may not be as eco-friendly. This way your wallet will not feel the pinch.

This innovative Eco Kettle has a unique double chamber that gets you to measure out exactly how much water you want to boil. This means that it saves you: electricity, water, money, time and makes it a better choice for the planet.
It comes recommended from the Energy Saving Trust.

If you’re having a party or getting a group of friends together, why not make it a green party?
When thinking about what drinks you want to serve, go for organic or Fairtrade wines and beers instead of the usual. Ethical Superstore have a huge selection of organic, Fairtrade, and socially responsible wines by the bottle and the case, starting from £4.95 (for a bottle not case!). Choose UK grown juices, for example apple or pear juice are usually in good supply, or check out the range of organic and fair trade juices on the market, or even better go to the local greengrocer (if your town still has one!), or check out fruit and vegetables at your local farmers market. Abel and Cole are also a great online retailer of seasonal organic food. Whilst you’re at it, if you’re a big juice fan, invest in a juicer and make your own - my kids love to make their own juices!
When thinking about the food side, depending whether you are just making snacks or a full blown meal, go for organic products and ones that are UK produced. This time of year is great for Strawberries and Cream for dessert. For a main why not get organic, UK produced and grown, meat and vegetables.
