Featured Retailer: Kitchen Garden Preserves

Brenda writes…

This weeks featured retailer is Barbara from Kitchen Garden Foods Ltd, whose brand name is Kitchen Garden Preserves.  I was very lucky to receive some of the yummy preserves to test out…more later.

Kitchen Garden Preserves is run by husband and wife team Barbara and Robin Moinet.  Their reason for starting the company was that Barbara wanted to make jams and chutneys like her mother did and thought she could do it whilst at home with her children.  They have been in business for 19 years.

Although they no longer make their products from home, the products are still pure, additive free and totally delicious - this I can say is very true, as I have been smothering my toast with the organic seville marmalade for the last week. Approximately a third of what they produce is registered organic with the Soil Association.

They supply independant shops all over the UK and export to America, Hong Kong and Sweden.  They do not sell to supermarkets, but do produce  private label preserves for a few prestigious customers.

Barbara says her favourite green luxury item is their Organic Seville Orange Marmalade and her Eco-balls, which although it is not a strictly luxury item, they get her washing nice and clean and do not mess with her septic tank!

Barbara’s top green tip is use the plastic food trays/containers (the ones that the supermarkets seem to feel necessary to keep the apples from bruising) as seed trays in the green house.

In Barbara´s free time she likes to go to the gym, flamenco classes, gardening, singing, and reading.

Like I said earlier I was lucky enough to try a few samples from Barbara which included the Organic Seville Orange Marmalade which was one of the best tasting marmalades ever and I really enjoy it on my toast in the morning.  The Organic Cranberry Sauce was also a major hit in my family, especially with my hubby who has been eating it with his meat.

To celebrate The Green Familia launching on Facebook and Twitter this week, we have got 3 jars of Kitchen Garden Preserves to give away to 1 lucky reader, all you have to do is become a fan of The Green Familia on Facebook and/or Twitter if you like by 5pm Monday 29th September 2008.

Greenie Thought for the Day: Organic Sustainable Fish Fingers

Kat writes…

I have been wondering about fish fingers for some time now. Are they they food of the devil and a slippery slope to suppertime junk food or a convenient and tasty childhood food? My wonderings lead me to No Catch the world’s first organic and sustainable cod fish fingers.

They’re chunkier than the fish fingers of our childhood made from sustainably farmed organic cod. You won’t find them in the frozen aisle; these beauties come fresh and are sold alongside the fresh fish. The crunchy breadcrumb coating is also organic and free from junk. No Catch have their farm in the fresh unpolluted waters of Shetland and are committed to the health of the seas as well as their fish.

By buying No Catch fish you can ensure that you and your kids are eating pesticide and junk free food. You are also ensuring that you are not contributing to the problems of overfishing in our waters. I am certainly a convert and will be giving the fish fingers a try this week.

I can vouch for the flavour and agree with the many taste awards they have notched up over the years.

Greenie Thought of The Day: Organic Food Festival

Kat writes…

Saturday sees the beginning of Organic Fortnight and we are celebrating the abundance of the season here at The Green Familia. All this week our Greenie Thoughts will be turned to British Organic Food in anticipation of this weekend’s Soil Association Organic Food Festival.

I have long been a fan of the festival and have been along several times. It is held in Bristol’s harbourside and includes a massive food market, organic clothing, homewares, skincare where you can shop in organic heaven. There is also plenty to keep you entertained with a demo kitchen where amongst others you can see Sophie Grigson and Gill Meller from River Cottage HQ. There is a dedicated kids area with activities such as junk modelling, games, food tastings, yoga for 2 - 7s, a cooking bus for 7 - 11s and even a chill out area for breast feeding Mamas. You can also enjoy an arts and entertainment fringe or a cruise around the harbour. Don’t get me started on the competitions - I will be entering them all!

You can bet on a great family day out to delight all of you senses. No doubt the kids will be exhausted by the time you get home! Tickets are £4 each and under 16s go free. All tickets are purchased on the day and there are several ticket stations around the perimeter. It is on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th September 2008 and you can find out more by visiting the Soil Association.
