About Rachel

How green am I ?
Pale green, I think, with good intentions to be darker green soon.
I believe my eco-friendly end-of-term report would probably say ‘could do better’. I mean, I recycle, obviously. But only the stuff that’s really easy to recycle, that the Council takes away from the doorstep. So I don’t think that counts, really. I haven’t flown anywhere for a while, but would have to confess that this is less due to a concern about my carbon footprint, and more to do with pregnancy and motherhood intruding on my city break habit.

Favourite organic products website?
Perhaps not organic, so much as sustainable, I am a big fan of ‘we are what we do’. Although it’s more of a movement than a retailer, they do sell stuff too:  www.wearewhatwedo.org/online-shop/
I love their philosophy of changing the world through small actions.

Best organic offline store?
Without a doubt, it would have to be Lush. I’ll admit you do have to get past the initial migraine-inducing headrush waft of essential oils. Hold your nose - it’s worth it; the products are fun, fabulous, amazing-smelling, and good value, and Lush is a company with real integrity.

What does eco-friendly mean to you?
It means living with one eye on the future. Living in a way that you wish everyone would live. Sort of like good manners, I believe you have to act the way you want the world to be, rather than waiting to be forced. One of my favourite quotations is ‘be the change you want to see in the world’.

What is your best green shopping tip?
Become a vegetarian!
I know, I know. Deeply boring, and yes, I do miss bacon sandwiches, thanks for bringing that up. But I sleep easier at night knowing I’m not eating meat, and now it turns out that the almighty UN have come out and told us all that we all need to become vegetarian for environmental reasons. Smug, moi? Well, I’m still wearing leather shoes, so not really. But it makes you think.
